The Kenya Open Boxing Championships will be held in Nairobi on April 16-19.

All boxers who have gone through the National Intermediate Championships are allowed to trade leather here with others who have been there in the past in all weight categories in their capacities.

“This is a forum that allows boxers to come in as individuals without the necessity of being sponsored by clubs,” said Nairobi County Boxing Association Secretary General Musa Benjamin, who doubles up as national team coach.

He said boxers from the county were ready for the duel.

The four-day competition is the first local assignment after the incumbent executive led by Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) president Anthony ‘Jamal’ Ombok was re-elected into office for another term of four years.

And as teams get ready for the National Boxing League set for May 15-17 in Busia, they must first take part in the Kenya Open Championships.

The Kenya Open Boxing Championships allows all boxers to face some of the experienced boxers in an open forum in different weight categories, so long as they have gone through the National Intermediate Championships.

In a statement, BFK Secretary General David Munuhe confirmed the event will be held for four days as opposed to the regular three days.

“Kindly take note the championships will take four days commencing on Wednesday, April 16, for it to accommodate the high number of participants who are ready for it,” said Munuhe.

This is one of the tournament national selectors will use to gauge the skills and fitness of boxers in trying to pick those who will represent the country at the World Men’s Boxing Championships set for.
