Tanzanian music idol Lady JayDee, widely known as the ‘Queen of Bongo Flava,’ yesterday released her single, ‘Po Po’.
This release is particularly significant as it marked her first musical offering of the year and coincided with her 25th anniversary in the music industry.
This also becomes her first project to be released under her newly established distribution partnership with Universal Music Group East Africa (UMG EA).
‘Po Po’ carries her gratitude after making music for two and half decades.
“This song is to thank God for everything He has done for me. I have been through so much during my 25-year career: the battles, the wins, the ups and downs, the tears, and the victories.
“Many people I started with are no longer in the picture, but He gave me the courage to overcome whatever came my way. And here I am today, celebrating my 25th anniversary in music. He truly made me brave,” she says.
She further emphasised that many colleagues who started alongside her are no longer present, sharing her gratitude for overcoming challenges that came her way.
Reflecting on the creative process behind making of the song, she shared that she experienced feelings of immense happiness and a sense of holiness during the recording sessions.
Her intentions, she says, extend beyond personal expression; she hopes to instill a sense of courage and fearlessness in every listener facing personal struggles in their lives.
“I want everybody listening to this song to be encouraged and not to fear anything coming their way, because the only way to get where you want to go is to believe.”
With a clean record since she started her music career, the legendary musician also shared her pride and remarkable feat for navigating the murky waters of the entertainment industry for a quarter-century with an unblemished reputation.
This goes to show her professionalism and dedication to creating long-lasting music without students or being involved in scandals. For her, ‘Po Po’ is more than a new single. It’s an invitation to celebrate her milestone, acknowledging the collective efforts that made her a respected musical figure in East Africa and beyond.
“It feels good. I feel special. I am favored, and I don’t take this for granted. My 25th anniversary in the entertainment industry with no scandals is no joke! I’m proud of myself, and I want everyone to be proud of me too, because I made it.”
