Tell us a bit about yourself and some of your successful music projects.

I’m Liz Bleey—a singer, songwriter, and performer based in Nairobi. Music has always been part of my DNA. I have had the chances to perform at various clubs and events, which helped build my stage presence and confidence. One of my proudest achievements so far is Overdose, a collaboration with Trio Mio. The response was overwhelming, and it pushed me into new creative territory. My music is deeply inspired by my personal experiences, and I love connecting with audiences who relate to my sound and lyrics.

Where did you pursue your studies, and what did you specialise in?

I studied Information Technology at KCA University.

Your favourite and least favourite units while at university?

My favourite was the final year project. It gave me a chance to bring everything I’d learnt together and create something meaningful. I can’t say I had a worst unit. Some were tougher than others, but I embraced the challenge in all of them.

Any lecturers who stood out?

My best lecturer was Joseph Kuria. He was patient, encouraging, and always willing to help when I needed guidance. I wouldn’t say I had a worst lecturer. Everyone had their own approach, and I tried to learn something from each.

How would you describe your overall campus life?

Campus was an incredible experience, I can’t complain. I met new people, stepped outside my comfort zone, and grew a lot—personally, academically, and professionally. It was a time of discovery.

How did you earn money while studying?

Music paid my bills. I performed at clubs and events. It wasn’t just about the money—it also helped me grow as an artist. Those gigs taught me how to own a stage and connect with an audience.

How was dating in campus?

Not really. I didn’t date in campus. I was laser-focused on my craft, my growth, and building something lasting. Relationships weren’t my priority.

What’s your opinion on campus relationships?

They work for some people. I know friends who found real, lasting connections. It just wasn’t my path. Sometimes I joke that I should’ve tried it, but honestly, I think I made the right call for me.

Where did you spend your weekends?

Mostly in music classes or studio sessions. I stayed productive and focused on my goals.

How did you spend your free time?

After finishing assignments, I’d shift gears to songwriting. Music has always been my therapy. I also enjoyed reading—nothing too heavy, just stories that helped me unwind.

Which classmates left a lasting impression on you?

People like Roharn, Joy, Raf, Kester, Mark, Joan, and Bravin—they brought so much joy, especially during first year.

Advice for young creatives entering the music industry?

Stay consistent. It might feel impossible at times, but if you keep at it, it gets easier with time. Believe in yourself even when others don’t. Keep learning and growing—it’s the only way to stay relevant.

What else do you do besides music, and how do you balance it all?

I’m also a fashion designer. Balancing both is surprisingly easy because they complement each other. Music inspires my fashion, and fashion feeds my creativity in music. They’re both forms of storytelling for me.
