Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has revoked the appointment of four members of the University of Nairobi Council, effective April 11.

The four — Sally Toroitich, Ahmed Abdullahi, Parmain Narrikae, and Carren Omwenga — have ceased to hold their positions, according to a gazette notice issued by the CS.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 36(1) (d) of the Universities Act, 2012, as read together with Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education revokes the appointment of Sally Toroitich, Ahmed Abdullahi, Parmain Ole Narikae, Carren Kerubo Omwenga, as members of the Council of the University of Nairobi,” read a part of the gazette notice by Ogamba.

The revocation comes more than a month after the removal of Prof Amukowa Anangwe as chairperson of the UoN Council.

Anangwe’s ouster followed mounting pressure from university lecturers who had threatened to strike, demanding the dissolution of the council as part of broader governance reforms to improve efficiency and accountability.

However, the High Court, days later, overturned Ogamba’s decision to fire Anangwe and barred both the CS and the Attorney General from appointing a replacement pending hearing of the case challenging his dismissal.

Last week, UoN Acting Vice-Chancellor Margaret Hutchinson revealed deep divisions between the university’s management and the university council, which have fuelled a protracted leadership dispute at the institution.
