The government has suspended all transplant services at the Mediheal Group of Hospitals. The directive takes effect immediately.

The Ministry of Health announced the move on Wednesday. It specifically halts kidney transplant procedures at the facility.

According to the statement, the decision was made following “credible concerns” from both the government and the public.

The concerns relate to the hospital’s compliance with ethical standards.

“Effective immediately, all transplant services — and in particular kidney transplant services — at Mediheal Group of Hospitals are hereby suspended until further notice,” the statement read.

Officials cited ethical issues as the reason for the shutdown.

“This decision follows credible concerns from government and citizens regarding the facility’s adherence to required ethical standards in the conduct of transplant procedures,” the Ministry said.

No further details were provided about the nature of the concerns.

It is also unclear how long the suspension will last. The Ministry said services are halted “until further notice.”

The suspension marks a major development in the health sector. Mediheal Group is one of the private hospitals offering transplant services in Kenya.

The move is part of broader government efforts to tighten oversight in the medical field. It follows growing scrutiny over how transplant services are handled across the country.

The Ministry emphasised that the action is necessary to protect patients and uphold professional standards.

The suspension will likely affect patients awaiting kidney transplants at the facility; however, in the statement, the government said affected patients will be redirected to other licensed transplant facilities across the country.

“All patients currently receiving or seeking transplant-related services at
Mediheal are advised to seek care at the following eight licensed
kidney transplant facilities: Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching
and Referral Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, M.P. Shah
Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital- Eldoret, Nairobi West
Hospital, and Mater Hospital,” the statement reads in part.
