An old video clip has shown the humble beginnings of one of Kenya’s most celebrated Ohangla stars, Prince Indah.

The resurfaced footage from 2015 shows a younger, less-known Evans Ochieng Opiyo, now famously known as Prince Indah, dancing energetically in a music video by his uncle and Ohangla legend, Emma Jalamo.

In the nostalgic clip, a visibly spirited Indah whines his waist and stomps rhythmically by a poolside, dressed in a Lil Wayne T-shirt, old-school jeans, and a flash of blonde dyed into his hair, a clear nod to youthful rebellion and musical inspiration.

His dance was carefree, but behind the moves was a dream already in motion.

The viral video has sparked a wave of admiration online, with fans lauding the ‘Herawa Ni’ hitmaker for the personal improvement since that poolside appearance.

From an eager dancer and instrumentalist, Indah has evolved into a musical powerhouse, bagging awards and commanding massive audiences in the Ohangla scene.

He now proudly bears the title ‘King of Ohangla’, a name given to him by his adoring fans.

In past interviews, Janabi, as he is affectionately called, revealed that Emma Jalamo, who at the time was ruling the airwaves with hits like ‘Aora Oyaro’, was his biggest inspiration.

Determined to carve his own path, Indah started as a simple ‘Ongeng’ player, impressing Jalamo with his dedication and musical instinct.

By 2014, his weekly earnings had grown from a modest Sh3,000 to Sh10,000, thanks to a breakout performance at one of Jalamo’s concerts.

That moment, according to Indah, changed everything. Encouraged by his mentor, he released his debut album Cinderella in 2015, followed by the formation of his own band, Malaika Musicals, a year later.

By the end of 2016, he had officially announced his solo career, Emma Jalamo gave him his blessing.

Today, Prince Indah is more than just a name on posters. He’s a symbol of resilience, growth, and raw talent honed with hard work.

Prince Indah’s lavish traditional wedding to longtime partner Winnie Nyamigori is proof of his personal and professional success.

One X user summed it up perfectly: “Success cannot be delayed, 10 years later and this man has transformed.”

Another added a dose of humour, “Even Lil Wayne is proud of him.”
