Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino has warned residents against taking the law into their hands, saying this has led to the loss of lives of innocent people.

Owino cited the recent incident where a butcher and his driver were killed near the Kobodo trading centre in Kanyamwa Kologi Ward on suspicion of being cattle thieves.

Bob Ochieng, a butcher at Sikwadhi trading centre in North Kabwach Ward, had hired Kevin Odero to ferry a cow he had bought before they were attacked and killed by a mob and the vehicle was torched on Wednesday evening.

Speaking during his mother’s 90th birthday celebration in Malela village, the MP said that mob justice can lead to deaths of people for unjustifiable reasons.

“It is very sad that we are mourning the deaths of two businessmen who were working hard to help in growing our economy because of mob justice. The deceased had families they were taking care of. Who is going to play their roles?” He posed.

Owino emphasized the need for proper verification of criminal allegations against suspects who should be handed over to police.

“Let the people verify the crime allegations properly, and if there is evidence, they should hand over the suspects to police. Police will take punitive legal action. Let us stop killing innocent people,” he said.

The MP urged residents to collaborate with police to eradicate crime in the area.
