Several infrastructure projects taking shape in the newly elevated centres in Siaya are set to unlock the county’s economic potential.

According to Siaya Governor James Orengo, the ongoing construction of ring-roads in Sega, Usenge and Ndori towns are intended to improve connectivity, scale up the towns’ competitiveness and attract investments.

Speaking while inaugurating the new towns’ management committees, Orengo said the infrastructure projects will also attract property investment.

“These newly upgraded towns are not only a cornerstone wealth creation, but also present a wealth of untapped potential for investors,” said Orengo.

The construction of the Sega Market Link Roads includes the development of a 1.2-kilometer road upgraded to bitumen standard, complete with drainage systems, a 6.0-meter carriageway, and 1.2-meter walkways on both sides.

Strategically located along the busy Busia-Kisumu Highway, Sega is poised to become a vital economic hub, benefiting from improved infrastructure and connectivity.

In Usenge, the phased construction of a Sh40 million ring-road is ongoing, with completion period set for 22 months.

For a fishing town that has been struggling with poor infrastructure, residents are now optimistic that the new project will be a game-changer.

“These projects aim to improve access to residential areas, business premises, and both public and private offices adjacent to the road. They will enhance storm water management, facilitate the movement of non-motorized traffic, and boost mobility for the local communities,” said Orengo.

The governor, who stated that the initiative seeks to strengthen connectivity within the market centers, reclaim encroached spaces, and reduce nighttime insecurity incidents, added that the elevation and the accompanying projects align with his vision to decentralize development and enhance service delivery.

“I am optimistic that centres like Usenge, Sega, Yala, and Ukwala, which have been conferred town status, will soon be upgraded to municipalities,” he said.
