Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government is intensifying its efforts in the fight against human trafficking.

Following revelations that numerous Kenyans are being trafficked abroad for forced labour and slavery, the CS stated that the crime now necessitates greater attention to combat it effectively.

“As a Ministry, we have strengthened the fight against this vice and are looking to establish a special anti-human trafficking unit. This will ensure stricter enforcement of labour migration regulations so that individuals luring our youth with promises of a better future abroad,” said Murkomen.

Murkomen was addressing the National Assembly Committee on National Administration and Internal Security, chaired by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo, in response to various questions raised by MPs. He said human trafficking is a challenge that requires an all-of-society and multi-agency approach to address.

Meanwhile, the Interior CS disclosed that the government has established a comprehensive framework to ensure lawful conflict resolution when disagreements arise, promoting lasting peace within communities. The initiative aims to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement agencies and local communities.

Furthermore, he mentioned that his Ministry is streamlining the command structure of the National Police Reservists and improving their welfare through the enactment of the National Police Reservists Policy. The policy will provide a legal framework governing their operations and enable them to enhance security in remote regions.

At the same time, Murkomen informed the MPs that the government is reviewing the National Administration Policy to streamline the scheme of service, including promotion, career progression, and remuneration of NGAO officers, thereby enhancing their welfare and improving service delivery to Kenyans.

He also outlined that the Ministry is engaging with the National Treasury to secure funding for the operationalization of the remaining gazetted administrative units.

“I lauded the MPs who are partnering with us through the NG-CDF in developing the necessary infrastructure to enable the operationalization of these units and called for more collaboration,” he stated.
