Kisumu is set to come alive this Saturday as Nyanza Golf Club hosts one of its most colorful and spirited events of the year—the April Babies Monthly Mug.

Known for blending competitive golf with vibrant birthday celebrations, the tournament promises an exciting day on the greens for players and spectators alike.

With tee times starting as early as 7:30 AM, the event has drawn over 50 golfers who will compete in 14 groups throughout the day. The tournament will be played on the White and Black course, with the off-course dress code set to “Polka Dots,” ensuring the celebrations stretch beyond the fairways.

Albert Ojonyo, the tournament chairman and one of the April babies being celebrated, says everything is in place for a smooth and enjoyable event.

“We’ve worked hard over the last few weeks to make sure everything is ready—from course preparation to hospitality. The support from our sponsors has been incredible, and we’re expecting a great turnout. It’s not just about golf—it’s about creating an atmosphere of friendship and celebration,” said Ojonyo, who also serves as a Director at National Oil.

The tournament celebrates golfers born in April, among them Nicholas Darius Odhiambo, Joyce Osike, Daniel Nyerere, Kevin Omamo, Brian Simbi, Peter Yongo, Elijah Adul, George Okoth, and Victor Oluoch. Many of these celebrants will be swinging into action during the day, adding a special flair to the competition.

The draw features some exciting groupings. Group 3, set to tee off at 8:20 AM, includes Joyce Osike alongside seasoned golfers BS Patel, L Magero, and T Nyambogo. At 8:30 AM, Daniel Nyerere takes the tee in Group 4, paired with T Arunga, S Maina, and V Odhiambo—a group to watch.

A major highlight comes at 10:20 AM with Group 11, which includes Albert Ojonyo himself. He’ll be up against R Obara, M Rotich, and S Wacuka, in what could be one of the day’s most engaging matchups.

In the afternoon, more firepower takes the course with Group 13, featuring D Riaroh, J Pabari, P Otieno, and R Bhayani at 1:10 PM. Group 14 closes out the field at 1:20 PM and includes April baby Kevin Omamo alongside N Shah, E Akinyi, and an unnamed fourth player.

Turning points for each group have been carefully scheduled between 9:50 AM and noon, ensuring smooth flow and timely finishes.

This year’s edition is proudly headlined by the National Oil Corporation of Kenya as the main sponsor, with support from Old Mutual, Safarilink, Jubilee Insurance, PACIS Insurance, AAR Healthcare, and other partners.

Their contribution has helped turn what was once a modest competition into a highlight on the local golf calendar.

“We’re looking forward to a fun-filled day,” added Ojonyo. “This event is about more than just competition—it’s a chance to come together, celebrate each other, and enjoy this game we all love.”
