AFC Leopards mourns Secretary General Gilbert Andugu

AFC Leopards are mourning the loss of secretary general Gilbert Andugu who passed on after a prolonged illness.

His death comes just months before the club’s eagerly awaited Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 29.

Club patron Alexander Muteshi led the tributes.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire AFC Leopards fraternity on the untimely demise of Gilbert Andugu, the secretary general of AFC Leopards. We have lost a young, passionate, and dedicated leader who served the club with unwavering commitment. His absence leaves a significant void, and he will be deeply missed. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Elected on June 26, 2022, Andugu had already confirmed he would not seek re-election, citing personal reasons.

“I have given my all in service to the club, and it’s time for new ideas and new leadership. I remain a passionate supporter of Ingwe and will continue supporting the club from the stands,” he said earlier this year.

Andugu had earned praise for his organisational skills and was instrumental in streamlining the club’s human resource department as transport and logistics businessman based in Mombasa.

He previously served as Chairman of Chairmen from 2016 to 2020, helping expand AFC Leopards’ branches from eight to 35.

As the leadership race heats up, five candidates are vying for the chairman’s seat left vacant by Dan Shikanda, who has completed his two terms.

They include Boniface Ambani, Oliver Napali, Ronald Namayi, Olympia Musonye, and Enosh Mutoka.

For secretary general, the contenders are Asava Kadima, Robert Situma, Jesse Tetei, and Irene Wekesa.

In one of his final acts, Andugu extended the club’s membership renewal deadline to April 29 to ensure wider participation ahead of the AGM—another reminder of his lasting impact on the club he served with devotion.

His death comes a week before Mashemeji derby where AFC is scheduled to be hosted by Gor Mahia.

The second leg of the Mashemeji derby is scheduled for Sunday, May 11, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
