Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Tuesday visited the family of slain Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were to condole with them at their Nairobi home in Karen.
It is the first time Raila has met the family since the
gruesome murder of the legislator on the evening of April 30, 2025.
The ODM leader described Were as a courageous man who was
full of honesty.
He also said the slain MP served his people with dedication.
“The slain legislator was a courageous and
honest leader who served his people with dedication,” Raila said.
Were was elected on an ODM party ticket and was serving his
second term in Parliament.
The driver and bodyguard to Kaspul MP Ong’ondo Were have
been arrested and detained for grilling.
Police, who arrested the two Tuesday night, said they are
persons of interest in the case for now.
The two were detained by detectives handling the matter
after they gave inconsistent statements on what they knew or did not know about
the murder.
The two were not hurt when a gunman opened fire at a traffic
jam in Nairobi, killing Were on the spot.
Four other suspects had been arrested earlier over the MP’s
gruesome murder.
An autopsy has shown he was shot five times and that the
bullets ruptured vital organs, including his heart.
Were who was serving his second term in Parliament was shot
and killed on April 30 along Valley Road near the City Mortuary.
Investigators believe the killing may have been orchestrated
by an organized criminal network with access to significant financial
resources.
Police say they are looking for more suspects including a
police officer believed to have played a central role in orchestrating the
killing.
A requiem mass for the slain Kasipul MP will be held on May
7, 2025, at the Consolata Shrine in Nairobi.
Were will be buried on Friday, May 9, in Kachien Village,
Kasipul Constituency.
