The Turkana Professionals’ Association has extended heartfelt gratitude to President William Ruto for nominating Erastus Ethekon as the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), terming it a historic moment for the Turkana community and other marginalised groups across the country.

Led by their chairman, Jackson Nakusa, the association noted that the nomination marks a significant shift towards inclusive leadership and national unity.

Ethekon, alongside six others, has been named to the electoral commission, pending approval by the National Assembly.

“This nomination is not just a personal triumph for Ethekon, but a national statement on the importance of inclusivity, fairness, and equity in public service. It demonstrates that leadership opportunities are open to all Kenyans, regardless of their background,” Nakusa remarked.

The association emphasised Ethekon’s impressive credentials, describing him as a seasoned professional whose leadership is expected to infuse integrity and impartiality into the electoral body. They urged Parliament to expedite the vetting and approval process to allow him to assume office and serve the nation.

Mary Ekutan, Secretary General of Echami Aito, a professional women’s group in Turkana, echoed these sentiments, noting that the nomination had showcased the intellectual and leadership capacity present in Turkana.

“This proves that we are not only capable but ready to serve this country at the highest levels,” she said.

Ekutan further acknowledged the current government’s inclusive approach, crediting the broader coalition—particularly the input of leaders like Raila Odinga—for promoting representation of counties such as Turkana.

She highlighted the appointment of Beatrice Askul as Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, ASALs, and Regional Development as a testament to that commitment.

Veteran politician and former councilor Lazarus Echakan described the nomination as a proud and symbolic victory for Turkana, reinforcing the idea that the county’s professionals are equally equipped to compete on the national stage.

Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul and Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai also sent their congratulations, commending the president and rallying lawmakers to support Ethekon’s approval.

The other nominees to the IEBC include Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, Mary Karen Soroboit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.

The new team is expected to usher in a new era of leadership at the electoral commission, steering it through future electoral reforms and national polls.
