Tragedy has struck Cavari Village in Mavuria Ward, Mbeere South Constituency in Embu County after a 14-year-old boy died after consuming food suspected to be contaminated.
The incident occurred on Sunday after the victims consumed leftover food believed to be contaminated, which they had taken home from a public function within the area.
According to Chief Officer in charge of Public Health Henry Nthiga, the affected individuals had attended a community event the previous day, where some of them carried some leftover food home and consumed it the following day.
Speaking from his office on Wednesday morning, Nthiga said afterwards, the six started experiencing stomach pains and a running stomach.
He said by the time they decided to seek medical intervention, the boy’s condition had deteriorated and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Nthiga reported that the other six are still hospitalised and in stable condition and could be discharged soon.
He noted that preliminary investigations indicate that the affected individuals suffered food poisoning as a result of consuming leftover foods without proper heating.
He emphasised the importance of food safety and personal hygiene, urging residents to ensure that any food consumed is properly cooked, stored and reheated if it is going to be consumed days after.
Additionally, Nthiga advised the public to involve public health officials in events that include cooking or food service.
“Our officers are on the ground and well trained to inspect and guide food preparation in public gatherings to minimize risks of contamination,” he said.
