Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei wants the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s newly formed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) deregistered.

Cherargei yesterday claimed that the new formation was a mere regional outfit which doesn’t meet the threshold of a national party, and should be delisted by the Registrar of Political Parties.

“Under the Political Parties Act, a political party should have at least 24 functional offices across the nation before registration. We are telling the registrar of political parties to be very keen. Where are DCP offices across the country?” said Cherargei.

He alleged that DCP’s executive structure does not reflect the face of Kenya.

“It doesn’t have regional balance, gender, youth and it doesn’t meet the threshold of Article 10 of the constitution on principles of good governance and that is why we are asking the Registrar of Political Parties to be vigilant so that we don’t promote we don’t balkanize through tribal parties,” he said.

He said only UDA and Raila Odinga’s ODM were the only parties in Kenya that had made the threshold of national political outfits.

The Senator, who was elected on the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, bashed Gachagua, the DCP party leader, claiming he did not include Gen Zs (the youth) in the new political outfit.

“As a young leader, it is embarrassing that the people who have been defending Gen Z have no youth in the leadership of their new party. We can’t be saying that you support Gen Z, but when you form a new political party, you don’t put them in positions of leadership,” Cherargei said in Eldoret during a Senate fact-finding mission of project implementation in Uasin Gishu County.

He said DCP is among several parties hurriedly formed to deny President William Ruto a second term and had no other agenda.

According to Cherargei, the formation of new political parties, including DCP, is not unsettling Kenya Kwanza and President Ruto.

He claimed the opposition will not agree to a coalition to face Ruto in 2027.

“You have seen that the former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has his political party, and Gachagua has his own. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua have their political parties. All these are fragmented parties that can’t come together and field a single candidate,” Cherargei said.

He said the country’s opposition has no new faces and have no capacity to dethrone Ruto.
