Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at the DCP launch on May 15, 2025/Handout

Youth in the country have expressed different opinions on the unveiling of the new political party, Democracy for the
Citizens Party (DCP) on May 15, 2025.

DCP, which was unveiled by the former Deputy President Rigathi
Gachagua, has sparked conversations among the youth.

In an interview at Citizen TV on Friday, May 16, young people
expressed their views on the issue.

Angel Mbuthia, Chairperson Jubilee Youth League, said that the
image of the youth was tainted following the disruption caused by the ‘goons’
at the launch of the party.

“The highlight of the launch yesterday was about angry goons who went to disrupt the unveiling of the party of the former deputy president,” Mbuthia said.

“I don’t know why the media reported and said that they were youth who went to disrupt the event, because I don’t know how we established that they were youth, because now we are tainting the image of the young people. They were just goons/thugs and they should have been labelled as that,” she said.

Elijah Sawe, a youth leader, said that the youth should
focus on whether the new party will provide solutions for challenges facing the
country, such as the scarcity of jobs and housing problems.

He urged the youth to not only focus on the ‘one term’
aspect but also the party’s agenda for the country.

“What I want us to talk about as young people is not the
trend ‘one term’ but the solutions that DCP will bring to the youth and the
country,’’ Sawe said.

Christopher Muriithi, a leadership consultant, pointed out
that for the nation to progress, the top leadership should be cut off.

He said that the challenge faced by the country is choosing leaders who upon getting to parliament, neglect their duties and citizens are
forced to fight on their own.

Ken Babu, a representative of the youth within the
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), has challenged leaders in political parties to
make it a priority to include youth in their parties’ structure, not
necessarily in leadership.

‘’It is a challenge when it comes to youth representation in
political parties today. We urge the party leaders to make it a priority for
the inclusion of the youth in the party’s structure,’’ Babu said.

Also in attendance were Victor Kiprono, CEO Zero BareFoot
Campaign, and Timothy Turunga, president youth for Pwani.
