Koyonzo Secondary School reaffirmed their dominance in school rugby sevens after being crowned champions of the 2025 Scrummage Katch Sevens Boys tournament, held at the ASK Kakamega Showgrounds over the weekend.

In the girls’ category, Santa Maria Secondary School from Elgeyo Marakwet emerged victorious after going unbeaten in a round-robin format.

In a tense and rain-soaked boys’ final, Koyonzo overcame a stubborn Kabras U19 side with a hard-fought 10-0 victory.

Rodgers Alukwe put Koyonzo ahead in the first half, capitalising on a well-executed scrum to find space on the right wing and score the opening try. Kabras U19 responded with intense pressure but failed to convert their chances due to crucial handling errors.

Beckham Wangila sealed the win for Koyonzo in the second half, slicing through the Kabras defense after a structured build-up to secure the title.

The journey to the final was equally dramatic for Koyonzo. They defeated Kakamega School 10-5 in a sudden-death Cup quarterfinal, before cruising through to the finals.

Meanwhile, St. Anthony’s Kitale had to battle past Menengai High 15-10 in another sudden-death semifinal, following a 10-10 deadlock in regular time.

Butere Boys, who had impressed on day one with an unbeaten run, saw their campaign end abruptly after a 14-0 loss to St. Anthony in the quarterfinals.

The final boys’ rankings saw Koyonzo take the top spot, followed by Kabras Academy, St. Anthony Kitale, and Kitale Day. Butere Boys, Menengai High, and Kakamega School also featured in the top eight.

In the girls’ competition, Santa Maria stood out with their disciplined defense and quick attacking style, dominating all their fixtures to lift the title. Idavaga Girls finished second, with Bishop Sulumeti, Chakol, and Fesbeth rounding out the top five.

Tournament Director Brian Mwenje lauded the level of competition, saying, “We are proud of the competitive spirit and discipline shown by all teams. The growth of the tournament in just its second edition is a clear indication of the passion for rugby at the grassroots level.”

The tournament also served as vital preparation for schools ahead of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two Games, where rugby sevens is among the key disciplines.
