Matungulu residents have welcomed President William Ruto to
the Ukambani region ahead of his much anticipated development tour.
This comes despite the rescheduling of the development tour
that was set to begin on May 21, 2025.
It was pushed to next week.
Speaking to journalists, a section of grassroots leaders
from Matungulu residents said they are keen on tapping into the government’s
ongoing development agenda.
The grassroots leaders noted that they are ready to walk the
journey with Ruto.
“We are expecting our President William Ruto, who will be
visiting, and we welcome him. This is a metropolitan area and we have people
from all walks of life. Our leader is in the opposition, but we want
development,” the grassroots leaders said.
They included one Margaret Munyai, Joseph Matheka, Alice Kalekye
and Christian Munyoki.
They insisted that they are in government and will walk
together with Ruto in this journey.
“We are not in opposition because there is no development when
there is violence. Come help us the way you have helped other regions.”
The Matungulu residents said what they want is development of
roads and other critical infrastructure.
They expressed
optimism that Ruto has demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of
Kenyans, and welcomed his efforts in the lowly developed region.
The tour which was set for Wednesday was cancelled and instead, a meeting held with leaders from the region at State House, Nairobi.
The President is expected to tour parts of the Ukambani
region in the coming days, as part of his ongoing outreach to counties with a
focus on delivering development projects and strengthening government-citizen
engagement.
The President had planned a high-profile tour that included
visits to key projects such as Konza City, Thwake Dam, and the Wote Stadium.
He was also scheduled to commission the Emali–Ukia Road and
inspect progress on the Kibwezi–Kitui–Bondoni Road, specifically the Kwa Siku
to Bondo section.
