Record Kenyan league champions Gor Mahia’s fall from grace in the 2024-2025 FKF Premier League has taken a sharp turn, with the club now staring at the real possibility of relinquishing their crown.

Considered its force in Kenyan football, Gor’s latest blow came on Monday when Croatian coach Sinisa Mihic resigned barely three months into his reign.

The current campaign marks the fourth time Gor will change coaches within 2024-2025 season, a statistic that reflects deep-seated issues within the club’s management structure.

From Leonard Martins Neiva to Zedekiah Otieno to Mihic and now Michael Nama and Otieno, the club has struggled to find stability.

For a team that has historically dominated Kenyan football—with a record 21 league titles—Gor’s current struggles is both uncharacteristic and alarming.

Mihic cited an untenable working environment, and strained relationships within the technical bench.

Gor Mahia currently sit third on the league standings with 54 points—seven adrift of leaders Kenya Police, who are chasing their maiden title.

While K’Ogalo have three matches remaining and the Police only two, their hopes of defending the title appear slim.

Mihic, who took charge on February 3 this year, leaves the club with a record of eight wins, five draws and two defeats in his 15 matches in charge.

He leaves under circumstances he is unlikely to forget as his time at the club was marred by internal turmoil and underwhelming results.

One of the problems evident during Mihic’s tenure was the constant infighting within the Gor technical bench.

His relationship with assistants Zedekiah Otieno and Michael Nam, as well as team manager Victor Nyaoro, revealed disunity and leadership wrangles.

Disagreements on tactics and player management were frequent, and a video from a training session shared on social media revealed players urging the coaches to resolve their differences.

During a match against Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium, while serving a touchline ban, Mihic stormed out after his assistants delayed a substitution he had instructed.

Mihic departure, which came as a surprise to many, followed Gor Mahia’s 0-0 draw away to Murang’a Seal, a result that left their hopes of retaining the league title hanging by a thread.

“We have parted ways with head coach Sinisa Mihic by mutual agreement. The two assistant coaches will take over on an interim basis. We wish Mihic all the best in his future endeavours,” read part of the club’s official statement.

Gor Mahia dropping two points allowed Kenya Police to extend their lead. Police have 61 points followed by Tusker with 55 points and Gor on 54 points same as Kakamega Homeboyz.

If Gor Mahia lose against arch rivals AFC Leopards, the Law Enforcers will be crowned champions.

Gor Mahia’s remaining fixtures are anything but straightforward. They are set to face AFC Leopards on June 1, Ulinzi Stars, before concluding the season against current league leaders Kenya Police.
