A Nairobi waitress is in distress after she lost almost all her hard-earned savings. This was after her then-friend lured her into a fake job abroad.
Mercy Mueni Omesnus, according to court documents, was fraudulently tricked by Rose Tami Ngina to pay Sh 41,000 to her while falsely pretending to offer her a job in Canada.
Tami is said to have obtained the money on diverse dates between January 23 and Feb 10 together with others not before court.
On January 16, the accused person texted Mueni to ask if she had gotten a job and, if not, to reach out to her, claiming that her sister from Canada was attending a burial in the country and she had only two slots.
The complaint called her, and she was advised to send her academic documents, including ID, passport photos, a high school leaving certificate, and a KCSE certificate.
From there the accused started demanding money from her, alleging that they were processing her visa and work permit. The complainant was compelled to send money oblivious of the tricks induced to her. To her, it was a dream come true.
Unfortunately, that was never the case; it seemed a long con game that crashed her hopes into nightmares. She had lost her savings, edging her on the fence.
This time the accused was volatile, and she stopped receiving her calls, accusing the complainant of being impatient with no trust. She, however, informed her that she had cancelled the whole process and she was planning to refund her money.
The complainant made a report to authorities who apprehended and arraigned her.
She has been granted a cash bail of Sh 15,000 pending hearing
