Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has publicly announced that she intentionally missed the National Prayer Breakfast yesterday.
She said that he spirit would not allow it and called President William Ruto’s recent apology a “word salad” lacking sincerity.
“I may not be able to quote King James front to back, and I am certainly no preacher, but this one thing I do know; apologies shouldn’t come in the form of a word salad. In fact, the best apology is changed behaviour – and that is yet to be seen,” she said.
The senator’s remarks targeted President Ruto’s apology to Gen-Zs during the prayer breakfast, which was prompted by a call for reconciliation from visiting American preacher Rickey Allen Bolden.
The apology addressed the violence faced by young Kenyans during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, which resulted in dozens of deaths and widespread allegations of excessive force by security forces.
However, Ruto’s statement, “If there were any missteps, we apologize,” drew sharp criticism for its conditional tone.
Many, viewed the use of “if” as a reluctance to fully accept responsibility, especially given the documented bloodshed and unresolved demands for justice.
Many Kenyans lauded her for her bold move and encouraged her not to be swayed as she has demonstrated her stand.
“Absolutely . You’ve said it perfectly;real accountability isn’t about carefully crafted words, it’s about action. Until we see genuine change, the rest is just noise. Respect for standing firm in your truth,” said one X user.
The visually impaired senator recently championed for Persons with Dissabilities bill which President Ruto passed it into law.
“History in the making: today, my PWD Bill becomes law. We walked this road together, raised our voices, stood our ground, and believed in the possibility of a more inclusive Kenya. This Act carries with it the weight of your stories, your struggles, and your courage. This is your victory,” she said then.
