The 36th edition of the Rhino Charge kicks off on Saturday in Baringo County.
It will be bringing together 65 teams for one of the world’s toughest off-road challenges.
This year’s event is expected to surpass last year’s record of Sh375 million raised for conservation.
Since its inception in 1989, the Rhino Charge has evolved into a premier off-road motorsport event with a powerful conservation mission.
The competition raises funds for the Rhino Ark Kenya Charitable Trust, supporting the protection of Kenya’s vital mountain forest ecosystems, often referred to as water towers.
These forests, covering only two per cent of Kenya’s land, are home to 50 per cent of the country’s plant species, 50 per cent of mammal species, and 35 per cent of bird species.
They serve as critical sources of major rivers, essential for agriculture, energy, and domestic use, while playing a vital role in climate change adaptation and water resource management.
Over the years, Rhino Charge has raised over Sh2.4 billion for conservation. These funds have supported: 805 km of electric fencing, securing Aberdare Range, Mount Eburu, and 70 per cent of Mount Kenya.
Community-led conservation efforts include beekeeping cooperatives, forest rehabilitation, and fire response teams.
Endangered species protection, such as the black rhino sanctuary (40 sq. km) and the mountain bongo rewilding programme.
Ecotourism development, with 56 km of trails built and 19,000 domestic tourists visiting the Aberdares in 2024.
“Rhino Charge is more than just a race. It is a lifeline for conservation,” said Christian Lambrechts, Executive Director of Rhino Ark.
Teams have been fine-tuning their vehicles, testing in rugged terrain, and strategising for the grueling competition.
Among the standout teams: Charging Hippos (Car No. 25). led by Sam Jethwa, a paraplegic driver, showcasing resilience and determination.
Bush Babes (Car No. 19), the all-female team, has been competing for over 15 years. Geco Tribe Chargers (Car No. 46), known for their adventurous spirit and conservation ethos.
Five-time champions (Car No. 5) – Led by Graham McKittrick, aiming for another victory.
Corporate sponsorships have surged, with Safaricom doubling its support to Ksh 25.8 million, backing Car No. 44 (AK44) and EV Explorers, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has also contributed 3 million shillings, supporting three teams. Stanbic Bank Kenya has pledged 1 million shillings toward conservation efforts.
For the first time in Rhino Charge history, an electric vehicle will take on the challenge, proving that sustainable mobility can thrive in Kenya’s extreme terrains.
The team, EV Explorers, will compete with Car No. 29, marking a bold step toward decarbonising motorsport while supporting conservation efforts.
“This is not just about racing, it’s about innovation, conservation, and rewriting the future of off-road adventure,” said Richard Kiplagat, team leader of EV Explorers.
The custom-built EV features two 480kg batteries with a combined 150-kWh battery life, a centrally positioned steering column, and front and rear differentials designed for extreme off-road conditions.
The team has also set up a solar-powered charging station at their camp, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable innovation.
“We are proud to be the first team to attempt the Rhino Charge with a zero-emission vehicle. Climate change and conservation are linked, and we wanted to raise awareness and funds with this in mind,” said Kiplagat.

“Rhino Charge is a festival of adventure, conservation, and community,” said Jane Doe, an event organiser.
The Rhino Charge remains a major fundraising platform, supporting Rhino Ark’s conservation projects, including electric fencing to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
