Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged Kenyan youth to utilise ICT hubs that will be built in markets for digital growth and job creation, rather than using them as platforms to insult political leaders.

Speaking during an Economic Empowerment Engagement in Kangudo, Machakos County on Saturday, Kindiki emphasised the need for responsible use of technology and digital spaces, especially in government-supported facilities.

“When you go to the ICT hubs, don’t use that opportunity to insult leaders,” Kindiki said.

“If you want to remove a leader, wait for the elections and use your vote to cast out the leader. Use that chance to look for e-commerce and digital jobs,” he added.

Kindiki said each of the 400 modern markets planned across the country will include an ICT hub equipped with 100 free computers and internet connectivity to support their computer knowledge and digital skills development.

The Initiative is part of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme, aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs and promoting grassroots economic growth.

As part of the programme, the government will issue Sh50,000 to 70 micro and small enterprises in every ward to help them expand their businesses.

“We are building these markets because most Kenyans own small businesses and risk their lives doing business in open spaces,” Kindiki said.

“We have already begun constructing 200 out of the targeted 400 markets.”

He revealed that one of the new modern markets under construction in Machakos is worth Sh450 million, with another in Matuu estimated at Sh350 million.

Fifteen more markets will be developed in locations such as Kangundo and Kivani, he said.

Kindiki stressed that the government is committed to empowering youth and promoting dignity through meaningful work.

“We must stop misusing young people and instead empower them,” he said.

“Look for solutions that create as many jobs as possible for our young people because they are the hope for our nation,” Kindiki added.

The NYOTA programme is expected to bolster digital access, stimulate local commerce, and foster innovation among Kenya’s youth.
