The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is currently appearing before the MPs over the controversial murder of Albert Ojwang in police custody.

Kanja is accompanied by the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohammed Amin.

Also present is the deputy IG of Police Gilbert Masengeli.

Ojwang was arrested following a report by DIG Eliu Lagat, claiming that the blogger was tarnishing his name on X.

They have been tasked with answering whether medical attention was provided and if there are any measures to ensure accountability for the officers who were involved.

The House is also looking to know whether the police took any action to ensure Ojwang’s safety while in custody.

“Kenyans want to know of any available statistics on injuries, abuses, or death in police custody over the last four months and any other ongoing investigations and prosecutions related to the custodial death,” the MPs stated.

Led by the chair of the House Security Committee Gabriel Tongoyo, they also want to know of the measures in place to ensure accountability and transparency, to boost public confidence.

Further, the security officials have been asked to reveal strategies put in place or are being developed to prevent the occurrence of custodial death and safeguard detainees’ rights.

“You also need to tell us from yesterday, when you were appearing before the Senate, what is the progress up to now?” Tongoyo said.

The Committee is expected to present a preliminary report to the Parliament on Thursday afternoon.

Appearing before the Senate on Wednesday, Kanja said the police are eager to uncover the truth behind the high school teacher’s death.

“We want to know who killed Ojwang’ and why. Let us give IPOA the opportunity to carry out quick and conclusive investigations,” he said, also noting that the reported tampering of CCTV systems at the station is under IPOA’s probe.

Ojwang’ had been arrested at his home in Homa Bay County on the afternoon of Saturday, June 7, 2025, and transported to Nairobi, where he died the following morning.

The autopsy report showed that he died of assault.

“The cause of death is very clear; head injury, neck compression, and other injuries spread all over the body that are pointing towards assault,” state pathologist Bernard Midia said on Tuesday
