It is emotional security, guidance, and a blueprint for future relationships. “Daughters with engaged fathers tend to develop higher self-esteem, confidence, and emotional resilience,” says Catherine Ochieng, a psychologist and family counselor.
She says that while past generations referred to fathers as distant providers, today’s fathers are more engaged, strengthening emotional connections through bonding activities such as play, biking, hiking, and shared experiences.
“June 11 was International Children’s Day of Play, and it reminded us how crucial fun and bonding are in parenting. Fathers who actively participate in their daughters’ lives create lasting memories and emotional security,” she says.
But what does it take for fathers, whether separated or in steady relationships, to build lasting bonds with their daughters? How does this relationship shape a child’s confidence, emotional well-being, and even their future relationships? “Fathers who actively listen create a safe space for their daughters to express themselves,” says Catherine Ochieng. “The balance between protection and trust allows daughters to grow into independent decision-makers.”
Amani Mwari, 17, speaks of the unbreakable connection she shares with her father. “My dad is my safe space. He listens, even when I don’t make sense. That’s what makes me trust him.”
Zawadi Abdi, 15, is planning a Father’s Day surprise, a dinner she has specially prepared for her father. “I know my dad loves me, but sometimes I wish he’d say it more. He shows it, but words matter too.”
What their fathers mean to them
Nia Mwaniki, 19, reflects on the respect her father shows her mother. “My dad treats my mum with respect, and that’s how I know what I should expect in a relationship.”
These daughters’ voices echo a universal truth – a father’s presence shapes a daughter’s confidence, expectations, and emotional well-being.
Real-life experiences reveal the depth of father-daughter bonds.
Diana Mwakio, a senior manager at an oil company, reflects on how her father shaped her life.
She describes him as “the last line of defense” in their household, firm but loving, ensuring discipline while fostering ambition. Her father instilled in her the importance of education, respect, and family bonds. He believed in equal learning opportunities for all his children, regardless of gender, and encouraged them to contribute to the family business.
“My father taught me that knowledge matters more than anything. He made sure we understood that hard work and ambition would take us far,” Diana shares.
And Flora Riungu, 13 years old, says she has been used to people telling her how lucky she was to have a father like Riungu, but she never gave it a second thought.
Now, she understands.
The intentional presence in her life has had a great impact on her life. “People tell me I behave like an adult, full of confidence, and that I will be a great woman one day, and suddenly it all made sense. These traits are tied back to who my father can walk into any room (he is a former chief), and everyone will be attentive,” says Flora.
Riungu has instilled in his daughter the power of self-assurance and joy, showing that fatherhood is about more than provision; it is about shaping character.
A father’s fight for his daughter’s dreams
In Saikeri, a small village in Kajiado, Titus ole Selempo stood up to protect her daughters against the cultural practices of FGM and early marriage in favour of their right to education.
He campaigned door-to-door in community meetings, ensuring his daughters had the support to pursue their ambitions.
“Our father didn’t just pay my school fees, he fought for our dreams, and made sure we had a voice, even when society tried to silence us,” Agnes Selempo recalls.
This story reflects the quiet heroism of fathers who go beyond traditional roles, becoming advocates for their daughters’ futures.
For separated fathers, co-parenting is about showing up, staying involved, and keeping the child’s well-being at the center.
“Even in cases where fathers are separated from their children’s mothers, the bond with their daughters remains vital,” says Catherine Ochieng.
