Radio Africa Group Deputy Digital Editor Nancy Agutu / HANDOUT

Radio Africa Group Deputy Digital Editor Nancy Agutu has been elected unopposed as a board member of the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK).

Agutu has been elected alongside Lynn Nzambi Kyalo, Mary
Mwendwa, and Clara Kagwiria.

Others are Robi Koki Ochieng for the chairperson position, and
Joyce Nyaruai for the treasurer position.

In her acceptance speech to her new role, Agutu said it is a true honour and privilege to serve as a member of the AMWIK board.

“This opportunity marks not just a personal milestone, but a shared step forward for the association and the broader community of women in media. For years, AMWIK has yearned for transformation, which is a shift toward greater impact, visibility, and inclusivity,” Agutu said.

“It has called for fresh ideas, renewed passion, and bold leadership. Today, with new faces and fresh energy joining the board, we are answering that call. I come in not just as an individual but as a collective force together with other members determined to shape the future of AMWIK.”

She also envisions an association that is vibrant, forward-thinking, and deeply responsive to the evolving needs of women journalists in Kenya and beyond.

“Our goal is clear: to make AMWIK the dream and the home of every woman journalist—a place where voices are amplified, talents are nurtured, and opportunities are created. Together, we will build a stronger, more dynamic platform that empowers, protects, and celebrates women in media,” Agutu said.

“The work ahead is significant, but so is our resolve. We are ready to listen, to collaborate, and to lead with purpose. Let this be the beginning of a new chapter, one defined by growth, inclusion, and lasting change.”

Agutu is a result-oriented media practitioner and communication consultant with over 10 years of experience in data entry, project management, coordination, and administration.

She is skilled in writing articles, reporting news stories, and creating marketing content for different platforms.

Agutu also has a strong background in managing digital news platforms, editing written documents, disseminating project information to stakeholders, and monitoring project progress.

The new AMWIK board member is also passionate about gender, health, and human rights reportage and coverage.

She holds a Masters in Development Communication bringing in a dedicated focus to critical areas of communication.

In her free time, she loves traveling, cooking, and listening to people share their stories, which fuels her creativity and understanding of diverse perspectives.

According to AMWIK, the positions of chairperson, treasurer,
and board members are unopposed due to the number of applicants.

However, voting will exclusively be for the vice chairperson
position, contested by Elizabeth Limagur and Ruth Nebokhi Nesoba

“After a thorough review, the committee has finalised the
list of candidates who have met the criteria as outlined in AMWIK’s Election
Rules and Regulations,” the statement read.

The campaign period commences immediately after the
announcement and will run until midnight on June 26, 2025.

Elections will take place on June 28, 2025, during the Annual
General Meeting, as per the AMWIK Elections Calendar.

“The Elections Committee extends its gratitude to all
candidates who expressed their interest by offering themselves for leadership
positions and all AMWIK members for your patience. We look forward to your
active participation in the upcoming elections and a successful leadership
transition.”

Established in 1982, the Association of Media Women in Kenya
(AMWIK) is a national non-profit dedicated to empowering women in media.

AMWIK strives for a media landscape that promotes equity,
human rights, and gender responsiveness.

With over 300 members from across Kenya, AMWIK collaborates
with media associations and community networks to drive informed, inclusive,
and impactful change.

It recognises that gender inequality and inequity undermine
development and that the media is a powerful tool for social change and
agenda-setting, used to create public awareness around key issues affecting
women to ensure public support and appreciation

AMWIK uses advocacy, research, training, coaching and
mentorship, publications, storytelling, exchange programmes or visits, media
shows, social media, podcasts, community listening sessions, and town hall
forums to achieve its objectives.

The Association  collaborates with organisations to strengthen
media, promote gender equality, governance, human rights, and combat GBV,
sexual harassment, and online violence.

It leverages its members’ expertise to drive impactful
projects.
