New champions were crowned on Friday in Homa Bay and Kisii as heavyweights retained their status in Siaya as the KSSSA Term Two games continue to heat up in Nyanza counties.

In Homa Bay County, Karabok Secondary School lifted the football title after stunning Ringa Boys 6-5 in post-match penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw during regular time.

Kobala won the girls’ final also on penalties, beating Saye 4-2 after they had played to a 0-0 draw.

In Kisii, Nyagichenche retained the girls’ rugby sevens title, while Cardinal Otunga Mosocho dethroned Kisii School to win the boys’ rugby title.

In Kakamega, Musingu Scorpions saw off Shanderama 3-1 to set up a semi-final date with Kakamega’s Green Commandos slated for today at Mumias Sports Complex. National girls champions Butere will battle with Mwira in the semis as Archbishop Njenga tackle Kimang’eti Girls.

In Siaya, St Mary’s Yala retained the rugby sevens title after winning all their matches played in the last two days.

Played in a round-robin format, Yala began the games with an impressive 58-0 win over Ugenya High School before seeing off Bondo Township 36-0 on Thursday.

On Friday, the KSSSA national bronze medallists saw off a stubborn Ambira High School 31-12 before sealing the title with a 33-0 win over archrivals Sawagongo 33-0.

Speaking after the win, Yala rugby coach George Kerima said they have already shifted their focus to the regionals, and as defending champions, he expects his team to excel again.

“It was an impressive show from the boys for the past two days, but we can’t celebrate yet. The goal is East Africa, but we start with the Nyanza games. We know all eyes are on us, and we shall deliver again,” said Kerima.

In basketball 3×3, Sawagongo were crowned champions after winning all their matches, also played in a round robin.

They saw off Usenge 19-6, Yala 20-17, and Ambira 8-15. St Mary’s Yala, on the other hand, finished second after beating Obambo 21-0, Ambira 21-10, and Usenge 21-4.

Both Yala and Sawagongo qualify for the regional finals.

“We worked really hard to get this team to the regionals. These boys have really shown up this year after the past two years of failing to make even the counties. Preparations begin now for the regions,” said Yala basketball coach Daniel ‘Luku’ Ayika.

At the same time, Yala’s volleyball and football teams remain on course for the respective titles after making the semis to be played today.

Yala will face Wagai while defending champions Ambira play Got Agulu. In the girls semis, Lwak will play Jera as Hawinga faces Sinaga.
