In an era where light pollution increasingly obscures the night sky, a hotel in Samburu is taking advantage of the clear skies in the region with an Astro-tourism package.

Here, amidst the rugged beauty of northern Kenya’s wilderness, a novel tourism experience invites visitors to reconnect with the universe.

In partnership with Leo Sky Africa, Samburu Sopa Lodge has introduced Astro tourism, an initiative designed to showcase the region’s remarkably clear, unpolluted night skies and celebrate nature’s forgotten wonders. This while honouring indigenous celestial knowledge.

The region’s proximity to the equator provides a unique vantage point from which to observe constellations from both the northern and southern hemispheres, making it an exceptional stargazing destination.

Guests gather around a bonfire under the vast Samburu skies, where trained astronomers and local community members share their captivating interpretations of the cosmos.

This fusion of ancient wisdom and modern science provides a profound understanding of the universe while honouring the local community’s customs. “This innovative experience combines Samburu’s naturally dark skies with rich community narratives and cultural beliefs surrounding celestial events,” said Kennedy Ayoti, Chief Operating Officer at Sopa Lodges East Africa.

“With the introduction of astro tourism, Sopa Lodges now proudly offers a ‘special six’, adding the stars to our unique wildlife and cultural encounters.”

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to responsible tourism, ensuring that guests can enjoy the natural beauty while helping to preserve the environmental and cultural heritage of Samburu. The launch of astro tourism marks a significant step towards diversifying Kenya’s tourism offerings beyond traditional safaris.

As this unique product takes flight, it elevates Kenyan tourism to new heights, inviting travellers to discover the compelling stories told by the night sky.
