Heavy police presence as protests gain momentum in Nairobi on June 25, 2025 / CYRUS OMBATI

Protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District have gained momentum as police and demonstrators clashed.

There was a heavy deployment of police officers in various streets in the CBD to keep watch and disperse protestors.

They used teargas and water cannons, barricaded roads to keep protestors off.

The town was painted white smoke as police used teargas to disperse protestors who were charging towards them.

Demonstrators, mostly dressed in black, chanted slogans and stood their ground even as riot police moved in.

The group formed a tight crowd at one of the key intersections near Parliament, pushing back against repeated attempts by officers to disperse them.

“They want us to fear, but we are not afraid,” one protestor shouted, as others banged on road signs and chanted “Reject Finance Bill!”.

Police officers managing protestors along Kenyatta Avenue were forced to flee for their safety after being chased by demonstrators.

A video seen by The Star showed hundreds of protestors pursuing a police lorry along Kenyatta Avenue.

Several officers were seen running, while others jumped over fences to escape.
