Kisumu Day are the 2025 Kisumu County Secondary School football boys’ champions.

Commonly referred to as Yudhee, Kisumu Day retained their title after narrowly seeing off Agai High School 1-0 in the delayed county finals played on Friday at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo.

Bavon Omondi rounded the Agai defence before slotting the ball between the legs of the goalkeeper to help Kisumu Day retain the title and complete a double over their rivals.

Last year, Kisumu Day edged out Agai 2-0 to win the county title in the finals played at Maseno School.

Speaking after the match, Omondi said he was happy to help his team win, and they can’t wait to redeem themselves at the regionals.

“Last year was tough after exiting the regionals at the group stages despite not losing a match. We now have the opportunity to rectify our mistakes next week and play better. Our goal remains to get to the nationals, and preparations begin today,” said the goal scorer.

Kisumu Day had been sent packing, and many believed their journey in the KSSSA Term Two finals was over two weeks ago when they lost 4-3 in post-match penalties to Onjiko High School in the semi-finals after having played out to a 1-1 draw during regular time.

However, last week, they were handed a lifeline after Onjiko was banned for three years for fielding ineligible players.

Kisumu Boys had appealed their 1-0 defeat to Onjiko during their preliminaries, a result that saw them finish third in Group A behind leaders Agai and Onjiko.

With Onjiko dismissed, Kisumu Boys assumed the second position, and all the semifinals and the final had to be replayed yesterday.

Agai thrashed Kasagam 5-1 to make the finals against Kisumu Day. Despite losing the finals, Agai also qualifies for the Nyanza region finals set for next week by virtue of Kisumu being the hosts.

Elsewhere, the Term Two games drama continued after Butere Boys High School were officially crowned the new Kakamega County football champions, following a Ministry of Education ruling that nullified Musingu Boys’ victory in the final held on June 21 in Mumias.

Musingu Scorpions had initially celebrated a 2-0 win over Butere Boys, believing they had retained the county title.

The Scorpions, last year’s national runners-up in Kisii, had earlier eliminated Kakamega High School 5-4 in post-match penalties after a goalless draw in the semifinals.

However, Kakamega High appealed, questioning the authenticity of the documents used by Musingu.

After investigations, the County Director of Education, Hellen Nyang’au, issued a verdict on July 4, 2025, stating that both Musingu and Kakamega High School violated Article 14(e) of the KSSSA Constitution by using inauthentic documents.

“Using documents that are not authentic (Falsification of documents), Musingu School loses the County Championship and Kakamega loses position 3,” reads part of the official letter addressed to both schools.

The decision means Butere Boys are the new champions, while Musingu and Kakamega High must replay their match to determine second and third positions.

The letter further explained that during the initial playoff match, one of the teams failed to show up, leading to Kakamega High being awarded third place by default. But the latest directive now requires the two schools to face each other again, using only eligible (Bonafide) students.

“Musingu School and Kakamega School are allowed to present eligible (Bonafide) students for a replay for positions 2 and 3 on Sunday, 6th July, 2025 at 10 am,” the letter continued.

The venue is yet to be announced, and no fans will be allowed to attend. The cost of the match is to be met by both schools.

The twist brings relief and joy to Butere Boys, who had accepted defeat in the final but will now go on to represent Kakamega County in the regional games later this term.
