Kenya has approved the Konza technopolis as its first airspace dedicated entirely to drones, giving a green light to long-range flights that could soon deliver medicine, monitor crops, and respond to disasters.

The move, cleared by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), marks a significant step in the country’s plans to integrate unmanned aircraft into key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and logistics. The corridor will allow drones to fly beyond the operator’s line of sight, known as BVLOS, within a regulated and controlled environment. This capability is crucial for real-world use cases such as delivering medicine to remote areas or monitoring large-scale farms.

“This approval is a profound testament to Kenya’s progressive vision of becoming a global leader in smart technology and aviation innovation. The establishment of this drone corridor within a smart city will spur significant economic growth by attracting investment, create new opportunities and also firmly position Konza Technopolis as the premier destination for African tech talent and enterprise to thrive,” said John Paul Okwiri, CEO of Konza Technopolis.

With the new drone zone, the city aims to support drone testing, pilot training, and product development under strict oversight. A full-time operations coordinator will manage the airspace, ensuring flights comply with aviation standards and safety rules.

By concentrating drone activity in a designated area, the corridor is expected to reduce risks to manned aircraft, protect privacy, and address environmental concerns. It also gives drone developers and companies a centralized location to refine and scale their technologies.

Authorities expect the corridor to attract both local and international partners looking to tap into Africa’s fast-growing drone market.

“We are incredibly excited to work hand-in-hand with innovators and organizations who share our mission to harness the immense potential of drone technology for positive societal impact,” said Annah Musyimi, Chief Manager, Physical Planning, Design, Compliance and Environment at Konza Technopolis.

Konza long-term goal is to become a hub for smart infrastructure and contribute at least 2% to Kenya’s GDP. The drone corridor is seen as a building block toward that ambition, offering businesses, researchers, and startups a real-world environment to test and commercialize drone-based solutions.
