A duo of school cooks has taken social media by storm after a viral video showed them preparing a giant ugali using a motor-powered drill.
The unconventional cooking method, which saw the staple meal stirred rapidly by the rotating drill, left many Kenyans both amused and amazed.
The video opens with two men maneuvering the motor drill over the steaming mixture, moving it in different directions to ensure the ugali was thoroughly mixed and ready to serve.
Once cooked, the cooks used a spade to divide the massive ugali into portions and scoop it into containers.
Curiously, the person filming questioned the use of a tool typically associated with construction. “Why are they using a spade meant for scooping sand and cement?” the individual asked.
But one of the smiling cooks quickly defended the method, assuring viewers of cleanliness and suitability for food preparation.
“Waambie ii kijiko si ya kuchota mchanga, ni ya kuchota ugali,” he said, proudly gesturing to the tool.
He added that the meal turned out delicious — a sentiment reportedly shared by the students.
“Ugali ni tamu ata watoto wakikula wanaskia ni tamu,” he insisted.
Ugali, a thick maize flour meal, is a staple in Kenyan households and a key part of school menus.
This unusual yet efficient cooking technique triggered a wave of reactions online.
Some netizens praised the cooks’ creativity, while others couldn’t resist cracking jokes about the industrial-style cooking. One Instagram user playfully commented using the viral phrase, “Teknolojia guys.”
Another user connected the moment to a promise made by President William Ruto to introduce a chapati-making machine to help combat hunger.
“Sasa ile imebaki ni ile ya kutengeneza chapati,” they quipped.
Perhaps the most hilarious comment came from someone who joked about the impact of such tools on students’ behavior, “Yaani ugali ipikwe na drill alafu waiserve na spade. No wonder watoto wako na kichwa ngumu kama simiti.”
