In Nairobi’s vibrant matatu culture, ‘nganyas’ are not just a mode of transport, but a canvas for creativity and street prestige.

And if the online buzz is anything to go by, this culture is only getting bolder.

The latest showstopper is ‘Mood’, a brand-new matatu linked to George Ruto, President William Ruto’s son.

Still awaiting its official launch, ‘Mood’ has already caused a stir with jaw-dropping videos and photos shared by Nganya Matatu Gallery on TikTok.

From the outside, the matatu is fully and carefully wrapped in bold graffiti, covering even its windows and windscreen.

It bears black luxury tire rims, completing its street-smart look.

The interior, however, is what sets it apart.

Inside, the matatu features VIP-style bucket racing seats that match the graffiti color scheme.

A quick look online reveals that a single seat costs a minimum of Sh60,000.

Adding a quirky touch, the design includes custom smiling emojis themed to the matatu’s name.

Like many other popular matatus, this one too has massive subwoofers installed beneath the rear seats, and additional auxiliary speakers mounted throughout to deliver a loud, club-like sound experience.

Perhaps the most unique feature is the DJ mixer/controller fixed next to the driver’s seat, turning the vehicle into a mobile party spot.

Passengers are also treated to entertainment from built-in television screens.

While many have celebrated Mood as a flashy, bold, and creative venture, others are questioning whether it qualifies as a wise investment.

With the cost of the minibus itself, plus the extensive customization, reportedly running into millions, critics doubt whether the revenue it brings in can offset the expenses.

Aside from the cost factor involved in customizing the matatus, safety has been a key concern, with some taking issue with how the matatus are driven.

Barely days ago, a video captured one of the famed ‘nganyas’ being driven recklessly around a city roundabout.

The viral clip captures the loud, graffiti-covered minibus speeding and hooting as it dangerously swerves around the City Hall roundabout, putting passengers at serious risk.

Others clung to the sides of the vehicle, some even hanging from the door, as the matatu tilted during its reckless maneuvers.
