Scola Onsongo is proving to emerge as one of Kenya’s most formidable lady golfers.

She’s swiftly carving her legacy in the world of golf with a commanding presence on the course and a deep love for the game.

The Machakos Country club’s member, who is a Senior Relationship Manager at KCB, started playing golf during the Covid-19 pandemic, has quickly risen through the ranks to fly the Kenyan flag in over 40 golf courses.

Onsongo is a household name to lady golfers in the country stamping her authority by bagging several prizes in the ongoing KCB Corporate golf tournaments being played around the country and the East African region.

Commonly referred to as the ‘Fairway Girl’, Onsongo’s journey has also taken her from the local greens to international fairways like the sun-drenched fairways of Stallion Mountain Golf Club in Las Vegas, USA, to the coastal winds of Fish River Sun Golf Course in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

She has also tested the serene beauty of Japan in the recent fleeting 14-day Sakura season at the Caledonian Golf Club, an experience as rare and remarkable as her rise in the sport.

Fortifying her finesse on the big stages and setting her mark on prestigious courses around the World, Onsongo’s talent has not gone unnoticed on the African stage.

She conquered the Mont Choisy Le Golf in Mauritius, South Africa while also displaying her skills at Achimota Golf Club in Accra, Ghana.

Golf requires a lot of time to play, casting a challenge whenever she does not have the time to show up and according to Onsongo, on average, a round of golf takes about four and a half hours.

“Golf is more than a sport to me, it is a lifelong passion. I pour my heart into every round because I want to leave a mark not just as a player, but as a trailblazer. I hope more women and girls see that they too, have a place on the course and can rise to great heights,” said Onsongo.

One of the best ways to stay mentally and physically healthy is to exercise, and golf offers that through long walks across lush fairways, navigating varying terrains and elevations.

For Onsongo, the game is more than competition, it is wellness, discipline, and joy and interestingly, she has also passed the torch to the next generation and believes that early exposure will play a vital role in growing a strong golfing culture in Kenya.

“Under the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF), I have introduced my two children to the sport, with my son Fifty Somoni who has taken to it with enthusiasm but my daughter, Twenty Kerubo, a budding marine biologist and competitive swimmer, has less time to chase a small ball, though the love for the game lingers,” said Onsongo.

Anchored by family, fueled by self-discipline, and constantly inspired by the great golfers she meets on the course, Onsongo continues to chase excellence with a firm belief that her journey is only but beginning.

With eyes set on breaking more barriers and bringing more women and youth into the sport, Onsongo is not just playing golf, but shaping its future, one shot at a time.
