Homeboys Musingu High School launched their title quest with a resounding 5-1 victory to the delight of their fans as this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two games began today at venues across Kakamega County.

Musingu showed no regard for their guests Moi High School Mbiruri from Eastern Region as they handed them baptism by fire in Group A.

A heavy defeat was not what Mbiruri had hoped for as they made their national debut at Mumias Sports Complex. Marvin Ashiundu bagged a brace for the Scorpions, who are looking to recapture the title they last won in 1984.

An elated Musingu coach, Brendan Mwinamo was elated with their win, saying that it was the best way to begin the chapionships.

“It’s a good start for us because the outcome of the first game is very important because it not only enhances chances of a better performance, but also boosts players confidence,” Mwinamo said.

The Scorpions had everything going for them as they enjoyed home advantage with thousands of fans rallying behind them. Mbiruri played well in the first half before Kevin Manan outwitted their defence to net their opening goal in the 22nd minute. The goal did not dampen Mbiruri’s spirits as they fought on with Devon Odhiambo scoring the equaliser at the half hour mark.

Austin Oluoch cut their celebrations short, restoring the scorpions’ lead two minutes later with Ashiundu scoring his first in the 36th. Musingu went into the break with a 3-1 advantage.

The Western champions dominated the second half even as their guests struggled to keep up with the pace. Ashiundu completed his brace in the 65th minute with Shaban Quimba making it 5-1 in the 78th minute.

Newbies Agai Mixed Secondary School announced their arrival to the national stage with an impressive 9-1 win over North Eastern’s Garissa High School in the other Group A match.

Agai had a field day with Brian Peter netting a hattrick while Moses Otieno, Abdul Owino and Rodgers Onyango scored a brace each.

It was a bad day in office for defending champions Highway Secondary School as they succumbed to a 1-3 loss to St Joseph’s High School Kitale in their opening Group B match played at Kakamega High School.

Collins Mwalati scored St Joseph’s opener from the spot after a foul in the box. In the second half, Instine Simiyu netted twice, with Samuel Mwanzi scoring Highway’s consolation goal.
