The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has urged passengers flying through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport to plan ahead, check their flight schedules, and allow extra travel time due to significant traffic disruptions expected in Nairobi today.

In a public advisory issued on Sunday, KAA warned travellers to brace for delays resulting from road closures and traffic restrictions around key venues hosting the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament, including the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium.

The road closures, according to KAA, are intended to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of participating teams, tournament officials, and thousands of football fans attending the matches.

However, they are also expected to disrupt major routes to and from Nairobi’s two busiest airports.

“To enhance security and ease congestion near match venues, several key city roads will either be fully closed or partially restricted,” KAA said.

“Travellers should prepare for longer travel times to JKIA and Wilson Airport and plan accordingly.”

Road Closures and Alternative Routes.

Aerodrome Road: Fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

Alternative: Use Likoni–Enterprise Road or Southern Bypass from Mombasa Road to access the CBD.

Lang’ata Road: One side closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout.

Alternative: Use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road.

Mombasa Road: One lane closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

Alternative: From CBD to Thika Road/Ruiru/Juja/Thika, use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.

Travellers from Thika Road are advised to use the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road for access to the CBD or the airports.

The traffic measures are expected to remain in place for the day and may be re-enforced during future match days as Nairobi continues to host large crowds for the tournament.

KAA Travel Tips and Contacts

KAA is advising all passengers to: Confirm their flight details early, Depart for the airport well in advance of their scheduled departure time, Use recommended alternative routes,

Monitor official updates from KAA or their airlines.

Travellers seeking further assistance can contact KAA Customer Service at +254 20 661 1000, +254 20 661 2000, or email [email protected].

Authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure public safety and smooth operations during the tournament. Still, residents and visitors in Nairobi are urged to remain flexible and informed.
