Award-winning actress Nice Githinji has officially resigned from her position as the Kenya Actors Guild (KAG) Committee Member in charge of Capacity Building and Programs, marking the end of a brief tenure.
Githinji, who was elected to the role on October 19, 2024, tendered her resignation on June 23, 2025. Her exit, the Guild has confirmed, was prompted by “personal and moral convictions”.
While the exact nature of the matter remains undisclosed, her decision to step aside has been received with respect and understanding by her colleagues.
During her six-month tenure, Githinji is credited with bringing unmatched passion, professionalism and drive to the docket, spearheading programs and training initiatives that aimed to uplift Kenya’s acting fraternity.
“She handled the docket with admirable gusto, diligence, and unwavering commitment,” read a statement from the KAG Management Committee, signed by Secretary Wakio Mzenge. “We sincerely appreciate her contribution to the Guild… and we are even more than grateful that she’s still open to contributing her skillset to the team in an unofficial capacity.”
The Management Committee has appointed fellow thespian Melissa Kiplagat to take over the role. Kiplagat, best known for her riveting performances on stage and screen, is said to have officially accepted the appointment on July 31, 2025.
Her appointment is expected to be ratified by the general membership at the next Annual General Meeting (AGM), as required by the Guild’s constitution.
The KAG committee expressed optimism about working with Kiplagat and continuing to build on the foundation laid by her predecessor.
This shake-up comes at a time when the Kenya Actors Guild is scaling up its capacity-building efforts to support a rapidly growing and diversifying local film and theatre industry.
