Siaya Governor James Orengo on Friday attended the burial of former Karachuonyo MP and veteran politician Phoebe Muga Asiyo in Wikondiek village, Homa Bay County, marking his first official engagement since June.

Orengo, who had been out of the country for weeks, returned on Wednesday amid speculation about his whereabouts.

His attendance was confirmed by Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode, who had been representing him at county functions during his absence.

Orengo was last seen publicly on June 23 when he appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee to respond to audit queries.

His prolonged absence fueled public concern, heightened by tensions within the county leadership, including a fallout with his deputy, William Oduol, who has since been sidelined by the administration.

At the burial, Orengo was received by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and joined other leaders in paying tribute to Asiyo.

He offered condolences to her family but did not address his absence. Instead, he voiced support for government efforts to compensate victims of police brutality.

Asiyo, a trailblazing politician and human rights defender, died on July 25 while receiving treatment in North Carolina, at age 93.

Celebrated for her fearless advocacy for women’s rights and democracy, she was remembered by leaders and citizens alike for her enduring contributions to Kenya’s political history.
