Popular Kenyan artiste Rudra Kartel has applauded President William Ruto’s government after receiving several pieces of studio equipment.
In a viral video, Kartel is seen chanting “Tutam” – slang for “two terms” in allusion to President Ruto’s presidency.
“The only thing I can say is two terms. This is it, guys. Tutam!” he said while holding a heavy box.
Dressed in a blue ‘Wezesha Creatives’ half coat, Kartel noted that it would have taken them a long time to acquire the equipment due to lack of funds.
He was accompanied by other individuals who also thanked the President for the donation.
“These things would have taken us a year to buy, but they made it happen. We are here because of Ruto,” said one of them.
This is not the first time artistes have publicly chanted “Tutam,” following previous viral “Wantam” chants. Recently, rapper Toxic Lyrikali faced criticism after chanting “Tutam” during a performance at State House.
The Confirmation singer later claimed on social media that he had been coerced, saying he feared for his safety.
“The ground is still the same. Should I say one term while he’s right there and risk disappearing?” he posted.
Footage from the event showed Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie escorting Toxic to the front to meet President Ruto. Kiarie appeared to encourage him to endorse a second term, calling him back to the stage when he ignored the suggestion and explicitly instructing him to say “Tutam.” The rapper complied and greeted the President.
The incident sparked mixed reactions online. At the same State House event, fellow rapper Dyana Cods delivered an energetic performance and was seen dancing with President Ruto, despite earlier criticism of the government.
In a public apology after her set, the Set It hitmaker, visibly remorseful, knelt on stage and addressed her fans:
“I apologise to everybody. I love you. Sorry for the words I said that hurt you. I choose you over any president.”
Dyana Cods had previously questioned Kenyans for criticising President Ruto, later claiming she was joking before affirming her support for him on Instagram – a move that also attracted backlash.
