On Thursday, the Kenya Railway Golf Club hosted a special Left-handers Clubnite to celebrate left-handed golfers, a day for them to tell friends how proud they are and also raise awareness of the everyday issues that lefties face as they cope with life in a world designed for right-handers.

The tournament saw a strong turnout with 103 golfers competing for the top honours on the course, whose highlight was the Longest Drive contest on the par-five 10th hole, where all right-handed golfers were required to tee off using left-handed clubs.

It was shock and disbelief for most, as many couldn’t hit beyond two metres.

Despite the challenge, Ruth Mwangi and Kanini Kega were awarded the Longest Drive titles for both ladies’ and men’s categories, respectively.

Other outstanding performances were by Kaash Padam, playing off handicap 11, who secured the top spot with 23 stableford points, while hot on his heels was Martin Nderi, playing off handicap 15, who settled for overall second place with 21 stableford points.

On his win, Kaash stated, “Consistent practice, especially those late-night range sessions at the Golf Park, has been key to my success. I’m now focused on maintaining the upcoming Patron’s Cup that will be held at the Muthaiga Golf Club towards the end of this month.”

His flight mate, Fidelis Kimanzi, was recognised as the overall gross winner after scoring a total of 73 gross.

Emerging as the Lady winner was Jane Ndirangu, who posted a score of 18 points, highlighting the strong performance by female golfers in the field.

The future of the sport looked bright as Jeremy Lenana, playing off handicap 28, carded 28 stableford points to lift the Junior prize.

Angeline Mutuku bagged the Guest prize with an excellent score of 38 stableford points.

Pinpoint accuracy saw RN Njoroge win the Nearest to Pin Men title, while Lady Captain Virginia Munyao earned the Nearest to Pin Lady award. [Mose Sammy]
