Reigning girls’ volleyball champions Kesogon Secondary and national holders Kwanthanze on Monday continued to show their might as the 2025 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) games entered day five here in Kakamega.

Kesogon dismissed their Kenyan counterparts Bishop Sulumeti 3-1 to remain on course to retaining their title.

Kwanthanze, who had dominated the region since 2017 but lost their trophy to Kesogon last year, proved they are still a force to reckon with by thrashing Uganda’s Amus College in straight sets.

Kesogon exerted their dominance over Sulumeti who are keen to impress home crowds taking the first set 25-16.

Sulumeti recovered to take the second set 25-23 before Kesogon recovered to win the third and fourth sets 25-11 and 25-16 and maintain their flawless run.

Despite the loss, Sulumeti captain Serena Busolo remained optimistic saying that they are still in the race for the East Africa trophy.

“I still believe that even though we lost the match, we still have a chance to fight for the trophy. Our first goal was to secure a semis slot and we closer to making it happen. We just need to remain focused and win our remaining games,” Serena said.

Record winners Kwanthanze made light work of their Ugandan opponents Amus College seeing them off 25-9, 25-14 and 25-10.

Soweto Academy were also in brilliant form as they dismissed Uganda’s Katikamu Secondary School 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-18) to remain in the race for a last four slot.

Kenya’s fifth representative St Martha’s Mwitoto beat Tororo Secondary School from Uganda 3-0 (25-18,25-22, 25-11).

Today, Kwanthanze will take on Uganda’s Katikamu, while Soweto will entertain ESB Kamonyi from Rwanda in Group A.

In Group B, Bishop Sulumeti will tackle East Africa regulars St Aloys from Rwanda, whereas St Martha’s will play Mwanhunzi Secondary School from Tanzania.

Kesogon will have a rest day today and end their preliminaries campaign tomorrow against Mwanhunzi.

In the boys’ title chase, defending champions LT St Luc from Burundi humbled Uganda’s Standard High School Zzana 3-0 (35-20, 25-23, 25-22) to inch closer to retaining their title.

Debutants Mwaluphampa Secondary School also registered their first win after beating Tanzania’s Tumbi Secondary School in straight sets of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18. Gogo Mixed beat St Peter’s Mumias 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) in another encounter.

In basketball 3×3, Kenyan boys and girls registered impressive results against their visitors.

St Mary’s Yala edged out St Cyprian High School Kyabakadde of Uganda 12-11 with their St Joseph’s High School Kitale compatriots humbling Nyakasura Secondary School also of Uganda 18-8.

National champions Sigalame High School, however, suffered a heartbreaking 20-21 defeat to APE Rugunga of Rwanda.

In the girls’ title hunt, national champions Buruburu Girls, Asumbi Girls, and Friends School Tigoi Girls all won their matches.

Buruburu saw off Uganda’s Seroma Christian College 15-7 with Tigoi following suit by defeating St Mary’s Kitende 15-6.

Asumbi Girls registered a 15-10 win against Rwanda’s GS Gahini. The Kenyan boys and girls are looking to defend the basketball 3X3 titles won by Friends School Kamusinga and Butere Girls last year.
