Coster Ojwang’ to share stage with Kenny G at Nairobi concert

Renowned Kenyan artiste Coster Ojwang’ is set to perform as a supporting act at American smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G’s concert on September 27.

The much-anticipated event, dubbed Kenny G One Night Only will take place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

Ojwang’, also known as the Fisherman, will perform for four hours, showcasing his distinctive fusion of jazz and African cultural sounds. He will be joined on stage by his full band, which features a saxophone, trumpet, guitars, keyboard, and his signature horn and vocals.

The Manyopesa hitmaker also plans to debut at least two songs from his upcoming album, Mbak Ndalo.

“As part of the Kenny G concert, I’ll perform at least two tracks from my upcoming album. Fans should expect an unforgettable experience. I’m only requesting if they can allow me to perform for four hours, so that when Kenny G comes on stage, he crowns it all,” the Wololo singer told journalist Kalondu Musyimi.

Hailing from Migori County, the Auma singer described his relationship with Kenny G’s music as complex.

He explained that while he had listened to Kenny G’s songs growing up, they did not directly influence his sound when he began creating music.

However, the jazz legend’s melodies lingered in his subconscious. Calling himself an ambassador of African music, Ojwang’ said his style evolved from more native and locally inspired roots.

“It’s both yes and no,” he explained. “No, because when I used to listen to Kenny G’s music, I wasn’t serious about pursuing music at all. Those were just tracks we heard on Sundowner without even knowing who the artist was. I wasn’t paying attention back then. By the time I started making music intentionally, my style had already evolved toward a more native and locally inspired sound,” he said in an interview.

Tickets for the concert are priced at Sh8,500 for early bird gold and Sh10,000 for advanced gold.
