The Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered the prosecution of Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati on corruption-related charges.

The directive follows recommendations from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on allegations of conflict of interest and embezzlement of public funds.

“Upon thorough review, I have directed that Hillary Kipngeno Barchok be charged as follows; Conflict of Interest contrary to section 42(3) as read with section 48 of The Anti-corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003, and unlawful acquisition of public property,” read a statement by DPP Renson Ingonga.

The DPP has further directed that the inquiry file be resubmitted to the EACC for further investigation.

Last week, the EACC announced it was investigating four sitting governors and 11 former governors over corruption-related offenses, including embezzlement, conflict of interest, money laundering, and possession of unexplained wealth.

EACC Chief Executive Abdi Mohamud said the commission had completed investigations into 89 high-profile cases in the past eight months. “These files have been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions with recommendations to prosecute 82 of them. Notably, four involve sitting governors, former county governors, two former Cabinet secretaries, a principal secretary, and CEOs and managing directors of various state corporations.”

He added that investigations were also underway targeting five current governors and 11 former governors.

Mohamud said the commission is pursuing cases worth about Sh1.6 billion involving 822 county officials accused of irregular recruitment, payroll manipulation, improper allowances, and misuse of county mortgage and car loan funds.
