Nairobi thrives on drama, gossip and reinvention. Yet lately, one trend has eclipsed them all: Mumama love.

Once whispered in bars and matatus, it has now exploded into a full-blown social media spectacle. The word “Mumama,” once used mockingly to describe older women dating younger men, has evolved into a cultural headline.

From star-studded weddings to cheeky Instagram clapbacks, relationships between successful older women and their younger partners are not only surviving but flourishing under the glare of the public eye.

Whether celebrated or criticised, women such as Zippy Okoth, Esther Musila, Betty Kyallo, Diana Marua and Dee (the new bride of VJ Patelo) have become the poster faces of Kenya’s most talked-about love stories.

Zippy Okoth and Webston Kinmani

Dr. Zippy Okoth’s romance with Webston Kinmani could have been scripted straight out of a drama.

For more than three years, Kimani admired her from a distance, convinced she was far out of his reach. Zippy was, after all, no ordinary woman: a celebrated playwright, filmmaker and academic known for her boldness both on stage and online.

Their story began with a joke. When Zippy posted about wanting a man with a motorbike, Kimani, an avid biker, cheekily replied. That post went viral, and soon after, she slid into his inbox. A 40-minute phone conversation later sealed the beginning of their relationship.

Since then, they have paraded their romance on social media with gusto—showering together in rivers, dining in sky-high cafés, and filling timelines with unapologetic displays of affection.

Zippy, in particular, has turned her platforms into a diary of love poems and confessions. In one post, she poured her heart out: “I am tired of pretending that I am okay without my man… I miss how I melt when I am around you Webston Kinmani.”

She followed with a fiery poem that laid her emotions bare, “Usiponipenda nitapendwa na nani? Nitakuwa mgeni wa nani? Haki nimekubali kabisaa. Mimi ni chizi wa mapenzi Mimi ni mabusu wa mapenzi. Please stop advising me. When I fall I fall fully When I break I break fully. Whether it’s private or public Wa kudumu atadumu Wa kuenda ataenda. And the pain is the same. Just let us be happy owadza. My man Webston Kinmani I adore you. Thanks for always bringing out the child in me.”

Critics have dismissed their romance as a publicity stunt for Zippy’s upcoming play Foolish Forties, but both insist theirs is the real deal.

Kimani himself has shrugged off concerns about their 10-year age gap, declaring: “The age difference doesn’t bother me as long as there’s respect.”

Esther Musila and Guardian Angel

Perhaps no Mumama relationship has been dissected more than that of Esther Musila and Guardian Angel.

Their union caused a national stir, with critics unable to look past the two-decade age gap. Yet, years later, they are still together, thriving, in love, and defiantly unbothered.

Esther has faced constant trolling online, with strangers mocking her age. But she claps back with the confidence of a woman who knows her worth.

On social media, she laughed off insults, “Mimi ni mzee lakini I am fine… Fine girl. All those who are always out there insulting me, why didn’t my husband see you? Why didn’t he marry you since you are such young and beautiful girls?”

She has also challenged the double standards head-on: “These people who call me old, will they not grow old? Are they immune? They hate me because they can’t have what I have.”

For Esther and Guardian, children are not the defining factor of their marriage.

“Children are a blessing from God. A child is a bonus… if we get one it’s fine, if not we will still love each other,” Guardian once said, flipping the script on societal pressure.

When one fan pressed Esther about how she would react if her son married an older woman, she retorted without flinching: “That will be my son who will bring, not yours, so let it not bother you. Worry about your weight, finances, cracked heels, or relationship, just be busy.”

Guardian, for his part, has consistently defended his wife.

“If she has agreed to become one with me, she is my wife. It doesn’t matter how old she is. I am the husband. That is if at all we are married,” he said, warning critics to stop judging.

Diana Marua and Bahati

When Diana Marua revealed that she was older than Bahati, trolls wasted no time. They nicknamed her his “aunty”, Bahati, Mtoto wa Diana and dismissed their relationship as unbalanced.

But years later, their marriage is proof that the noise did not break them.

“I am only two years older than Bahati,” Diana clarified in an interview. “In the beginning, it used to get to me but what matters right now is how he takes care of me. He makes me comfortable. He is the head of the house regardless of my age.”

Their love story began in 2017 when Bahati was scouting for a model for a music video. What started as friendship blossomed into romance, leading to a traditional wedding in 2018.

Together, they now raise five children and have built a family brand that thrives both online and offline.

This year, Bahati announced a lavish wedding renewal set for October 20, their anniversary date.

Leading up to it, he spoiled Diana with a jaw-dropping eight-day gifting spree. From Sh5 million in cash and a Sh3 million bank deposit, to a 42-unit apartment complex worth millions and finally a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon Brabus valued at Sh45 million, the gifts made headlines nationwide.

Bahati explained the extravagance as a tribute to their eight-year journey, cementing their reputation as Kenya’s most dramatic yet admired celebrity couple.

Dee and VJ Patelo

If any love story cemented the Mumama movement in 2025, it was the flashy wedding of Dee and VJ Patelo.

Held at Naiposha Gardens in Limuru, the event was pure extravagance, with claims of a Sh500 million budget, a Sh1.6 million gown, and rings worth Sh1.5 million.

But beyond the spectacle, it was Dee and Patelo’s clap-back that stole the show. In a viral video, he looked straight at the camera and declared: “Cheki, mumama ni wangu sawa, mali ni yangu, wewe piga panganga (you see, the older woman is now mine, you can continue gossiping).”

He doubled down, saying: “Cheki, hamtani panga mtu wa kukaa na yeye tafuta wako (you see, you cannot decide the woman of my choice; look for yours).”

The cheeky caption read, “Diana ni wangu, tafuta wako wa PORCHE CAYEN.”

Dee on her part always defended her relationship stating she loved the bad boy that is Patello.

To trolls, his words were defiance. To fans, they were loyalty. Either way, the couple turned the Mumama label into a badge of honour.

Betty Kyallo and Charlie Jones

Never one to shy away from the limelight, Betty Kyallo has also found herself in the Mumama conversation after dating younger men, most recently Charlie Jones.

When the criticism came, Betty clapped back the only way she knows how: boldly.

“Why are you all so angry? Mimi napambana, I’m happy,” she said in a fiery social media post.

She urged her critics to focus on themselves, “Chase your happiness. Stop judging others… They are lonely, angry, opinionated and thoroughly dry.”

Jones himself has called Betty his “peace and happiness,” praising her for unlocking the best in him and laying a family foundation that “no one else can break.”

Changing society

These high-profile unions are simply entertainment fodder. But beneath the laughter, jokes, and hashtags lies a reflection of a changing society.

Traditionally, men were expected to be older and financially stronger, while women were younger, considered more “suitable” for marriage. But times are shifting. Urban life, economic realities, and changing gender dynamics have rewritten the rules.

Older women, financially independent and socially assertive, are no longer afraid to date younger men. In return, many young men are willing to embrace these relationships for love, comfort, or even opportunity.

For some, like 26-year-old Junior Wanjala, the story is less about romance and more about survival.

In an interview, Wanjala offered a raw and honest account of his experience dating an older woman in the bustling capital.

Hailing from a humble background in Kitale, he revealed how the relationship was born out of Nairobi’s unforgiving economic climate.

“I am 26 and I was dating this woman that was 20 years older than me. My friends or family didn’t know about it and I kept lying to them that I had gotten a job in Nairobi,” he stated.

Wanjala explained that the older woman catered for everything financially and all he had to do was remain loyal.

He described how she would bombard him with lavish outings, constant money tokens, and had even promised him a job opportunity.

“Hakuwa anataka nikuwe na girlfriend mwingine so I had to remain loyal. Na vile economy ni mbaya, alikuwa ananitumia pesa all the time na kunipeleka out. In fact, nilikuwa nampimia anipatie job kwa kampuni yake since alinipromise,” Wanjala said.

When asked if he truly loved the woman, Junior’s answer was blunt. He admitted that his presence in the relationship was driven by financial needs rather than affection.

Wanjala described the older woman as controlling, mainly because she was older and the sole breadwinner.

“Kusema ukweli, she was very controlling. Anaangalia simu yangu na ata laptop kama nacheat on her and it was scary. I loved her since she supported me financially and that does not make me a bad person,” he said.

Wanjala’s account is one that resonates with many young men struggling in the capital city who see relationships with older women not just as love stories, but as survival strategies.

What started as whispers is now a cultural wave. From Zippy’s riverside adventures to Esther’s TikTok clap-backs, Diana’s million-shilling surprises to Patelo’s swaggering “mumama ni wangu,” these women and their younger partners have changed Nairobi’s love conversation.

The backlash is still there. Some see it as clout, others as a “soft life” hustle. But one thing is undeniable, Mumama love is here, and it is loud.
