A heartbreaking video has emerged showing celebrated Kikuyu gospel singer Dennis Mutara in a sorry state.
The viral clip captures the Wendo ni Muhiu hitmaker lying on the ground, struggling to come to his senses after being woken up, seemingly intoxicated.
A group of men can be heard trying to piece together how he ended up there, with one revealing that Mutara had been abandoned by someone he had been with.
“How did he get here?” one man asks.
“I don’t know either,” another responds.
While the date and location remain unverified, online reports suggest the incident took place at the Coast.
The video has stirred sympathy across social media, with netizens flooding the comments section to express concern and prayers.
On TikTok, Ms Kaya wrote: “When I see people in such situations I don’t judge … I pray for them … coz I have seen God saving my brother from such a situation. He’s restored.”
Peter Kiharu added: “Pole, Mungu amponye. Walivyomfanya haya wapate aibu. My Father in heaven, remember this man for the work he has done for you. Come close to him and hear his tear. Amen.”
Gracious Mugush commented: “May Almighty God regain his strength, by remembering just one deed he has done via his songs.”
Once among Central Kenya’s finest gospel voices, Mutara is now a shadow of his former self.
In recent years, he has battled personal struggles linked to alcoholism and depression.
In 2023, fellow gospel singer and philanthropist Karangu Muraya revealed Mutara’s decline, sharing photos and later helping to hospitalise him after he was unable to walk unaided.
Mutara had previously undergone rehabilitation in 2021 following a detox at Avenue Hospital, but reports suggested he relapsed shortly after.
Despite consistently denying claims of alcoholism and depression, Mutara’s latest appearance paints a grim picture of his ongoing battles.
Yet, many fans and community members continue to rally around him, hoping for his recovery.
Mutara, born in Murang’a, began his professional music career in 2005, having developed a passion for singing from a young age while listening to the radio.
He went on to release several popular gospel hits, including Wendo Ni Muhiu, Ukiriria Giti Kia Murungu, Kindu Wa Nii , and Tigana Na Andu, cementing his place as one of the most beloved Kikuyu gospel artists of his generation.
