MC Gogo: Sexuality rumours pushed me into depression

Popular emcee and event host MC Gogo has spoken candidly about the toll social media hate took on his life, admitting it pushed him into a dark place and forced him to step away from the spotlight.

In a recent interview, the hypeman recalled how relentless online criticism left him questioning himself.

“I think I was depressed. But there’s one thing I noticed: that person who comes online to say negative things, maybe they are also going through their own struggles. If you start putting their words into your mind, they will disturb you a lot,” he said.

He admitted that the weight of constant negativity became overwhelming.

“There was a time I really felt it, and I decided to take a break from social media. I told myself I needed to come back to my true self. I thought to myself, why should what someone else thinks about me stress me when I know who I am?”

Gogo admitted that taking a social media break was the best decision yet, since his close friends were beginning to notice something was off.

“A friend of mine came and saw me and knew I was not okay. All my triggers were on social media. I was just at home, I wasn’t going out. I was just resting, I needed that break to come back to myself.”

Gogo’s revelations follow months of speculation about his private life, with online rumours about his sexuality dominating social media conversations earlier this year.

He has, however, consistently dismissed the speculation and refused to engage in the debate.

“I don’t want to talk about that issue anymore. Don’t worry, those are the problems of being famous. We don’t know each other, we’ve never met, I’ve never even seen him, even during his campaigns I never saw him,” he told radio presenter Ankali Ray in a phone interview.

At the time, he also confirmed he was considering legal action against those spreading the rumours.

Born Franklin Mark Gogo, the entertainer is widely celebrated for his unmatched ability to hype crowds.

Despite holding a degree in Counselling Psychology and beginning his career as a low-paid teacher, his passion led him into entertainment.

He cut his teeth on modest church and wedding gigs, developing a distinctive performance style and signature baritone that resonated deeply with audiences.

The COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 proved a turning point when he embraced the digital space, hosting entertaining Facebook Live shows that expanded his following nationwide.

His big breakthrough came via a viral TikTok clip, where his witty commentary racked up over a million views in a single day.

From that moment, his calendar filled with bookings for clubs, weddings, corporate events, and even international shows in Dubai, cementing his place among Kenya’s most sought-after and highest-earning entertainers.
