Chimano faces backlash, praise after twerk performance at Blankets and Wine

Kenyan artiste Willis Chimano faced a storm of praise and criticism after his flamboyant performance at the September 2025 edition of Blankets and Wine, held at Laureate Gardens, Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The former Sauti Sol member stepped onto the main stage in a lilac-striped suit with exaggerated shoulder pads, before switching into a purple chiffon top, flowy pants and a white corset adorned with embellishments.

He accessorized with oversized sunglasses, shimmering jewelry, a brown tie and makeup, which drew both admiration and mockery online.

Chimano’s set featured a choreographed routine with backup dancers and dramatic lighting, often switching hues to match his purple theme.

The 38-year-old performed hits including Beautiful Day, Suzanna and Fire, and at one point handed out white flowers to fans as a gesture of appreciation.

The highlight, however, was his twerking moment on stage, which polarized audiences.

While some praised the singer for his creativity and boldness, others mocked his style and mannerisms, sparking a heated debate across social media.

Fellow artistes and former Sauti Sol bandmates were among those who applauded his performance.

Bien-Aimé Baraza wrote on Instagram, “You killed it,” after making a surprise appearance during Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka’s set.

Guitarist and producer Polycarp “Fancy Fingers” Otieno also commented, “Beautiful.”

Festival founder Muthoni the Drummer Queen joined the praise, while fans such as Just Ivy described Chimano as “THE MOMENT.”

But the evening was not without controversy. Some festival-goers complained of long delays, technical glitches and sound problems during parts of the show.

The festival’s headliner, Nigerian Grammy Award winner Tems, received an electrifying welcome as she closed the main stage. Other acts included Kenyan performers

We Are Nubia, Zaituni, Flier, Billy Black and Toxic Lyrikali, alongside Uganda’s Joshua Baraka.

On the OnjaOnja stage, audiences enjoyed an eclectic mix from Akoth Jumadi, Mr Lu, Ite, Ghedi, Santa, Hiribae, Bune, Coco Khai and DJ Paps.

As reactions continue to swirl, Chimano’s performance has reinforced his reputation for challenging convention in Kenya’s music scene.
