The Miss Earth Kenya organisation has announced the dethronement of Mirel Atieno Ngesa as Miss Earth Kenya 2025, effective immediately.

In a statement shared across its official social media pages, the organisation stated that the decision was reached after careful deliberation, emphasising the importance of integrity, professionalism, and genuine commitment to environmental advocacy.

“Miss Earth Kenya is rooted in sustainable, grassroots advocacy, where contestants are expected to serve as genuine sustainability ambassadors, actively driving positive change within their communities,” the statement read in part.

While the specific reasons behind Atieno’s dethronement were not disclosed, the organization reiterated that transparency and professionalism remain an essential foundation for every title holder’s success.

The team also took a moment to acknowledge Mirel’s efforts during her reign, thanking her for her contributions and wishing her well in her future pursuits.

Revived in 2023 without government funding and with minimal sponsorship, Miss Earth Kenya has relied heavily on a network of volunteers and sustainability professionals who share a passion for eco-conscious living.

By the time of press, Atieno had yet to make a public comment on the decision. Her most recent social media post showed her leading an eco-activity with school pupils, teaching them how to create a simple kitchen garden.

“This activity empowers children with skills in sustainable farming, improves nutrition through fresh vegetables, and inspires the next generation to value the environment and food security,” she wrote.

In another photo shared on her Instagram Story, she was seen posing with the children, smiling brightly.

The Miss Earth Kenya team is now expected to announce a replacement for the 2025 crown in the coming days.

What is dethronement?

Dethronement in beauty pageants is an official act by the organizing body to strip a queen of her title, crown, and duties before her reign ends, often due to a breach of contract or conduct unbecoming of a titleholder.

Globally, similar instances have occurred, such as in 2002 when Miss Universe Oxana Fedorova was dethroned just four months into her reign for allegedly failing to fulfill her official duties.
