She’s young, vibrant and already setting dance floors on fire. DJ 4oxy is the newest sensation rocking Kenya’s entertainment scene and she’s doing it with unmatched energy and grace.
From dreaming of spinning decks as a little girl to sharing the stage with Genge legend Mejja, 4oxy’s rise is a story of passion and pure vibe.
“I’ve always wanted to be a DJ,” she says. “Even when I was studying Actuarial Science at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, I knew numbers weren’t my forever. Music was.”
Her journey began in her cousin’s living room, where she would sneak in practice sessions on his decks. “He’s a good DJ and had a complete set, so I’d train whenever I could. After graduation, I decided it was time to monetize my passion and that’s how my journey truly began.”
Before linking up with Mejja, DJ 4oxy was freelancing at gigs around Nairobi, chasing her dream one mix at a time. “I’ve tried the 8-5 life, but I just couldn’t fit in that box,” she laughs. “Now, I get to do what I love, travel, and still get paid for it — it’s the best feeling ever.”
The big break came when Mejja posted that he was looking for a DJ. “I sent him my work, and he liked it. The rest, as they say, is history. It’s been over a year now, and I’m grateful every single day.”
As a Gen Z who grew up listening to Genge, working with Mejja feels like a dream come true.
“It’s honestly a dream. I grew up listening to Mejja — I’m Gen Z, but I was raised on Genge! Mejja is a legend with hits that cut across generations. From Genge to Gengetone to Arbantone, his music connects with everyone.
“He is an artiste with the best music portfolio that has cut across generations. My work is to create that hyped environment or as we say, kuwaroga kabla ya Mejja.”
“When it comes to work, I keep it professional. I like learning new stuff and also practicing my skills some more. I believe there is always room to improve. When it comes preparing of shows, I practice for a while, then I just chill and let the good vibes flow. At times we practice with Mejja and get in sync for the upcoming shows and concerts.”
For DJ 4oxy, it’s more than just music. It’s about creating memories.
“First of all, I want to make sure that I give people a good experience. I want them to have fun because that is that they are there for. I want them to create happy memories and be carried away by the blissful moments. That is what it gives me the chills you know like seeing people are happy and I’m the cause of that.”
When she’s not commanding crowds, she retreats into a quieter creative space. “I love painting. It’s relaxing and helps me reset. I wouldn’t say I’m great at it,” she says, “but it’s my therapy.”
Yes, she is taken. But when it comes to her fans, her heart is wide open.
“It is amazing and you know I just can’t say how grateful I am with what is happening around me. I believe the future is brighter. At the moment I am concentrating on making my craft better and also releasing mixes for my fans.
Her message to young girls watching her journey is clear:
“Work on your craft and work consistently. I know it might sound cliché, but practice and keep doing it and one day, someone will notice the work you have put in. You know the internet is also full of opportunities, I have done countless submissions online for gigs and never gave up. I dreamt it, I worked for it now am here on stage with the ones who inspired me.”
Looking ahead, DJ 4oxy is focused on growing her brand, releasing mixes, and building a global audience: “I want to be remembered as one of the best DJ and hype girl who gave her all and loved every second of it.”
