Kenya Kwanza leaders have condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over controversial remarks directed at the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, terming the comments “un-African, disrespectful, and unbecoming of a national leader.”

Public Service and Human Capital Development Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku led the criticism, saying Governor Kahiga’s utterances went against African cultural values that demand respect for the dead.

Speaking in Evurore, Mbeere North, during an inspection of electrification projects, Ruku called for the governor’s resignation, arguing that such remarks were an affront to the moral and cultural principles that define Kenyan society.

“The governor’s utterances do not reflect the values and aspirations of African culture. You cannot speak ill of a person who has died. It is against our moral and cultural principles. He should resign,” said Ruku.

The CS further urged Nyeri residents and Kenyans at large to reject divisive rhetoric and demand accountability, unity, and dignity from their leaders.

His sentiments were echoed by Senior Presidential Advisor and former Mbeere North MP Muriuki Njagagua, who also condemned Kahiga for what he termed “shameful and dishonourable conduct.”

“The President recognised the late Prime Minister because of his achievements and sacrifices in the struggle for democracy. Disrespecting him even in death is not only uncouth but shameful,” said Njagagua.

The leaders called for responsible leadership and unity, especially during a period of national mourning, urging politicians to set an example of respect and decorum.

On the development front, Ruku and Njagagua commended the government’s ongoing efforts to transform rural communities through infrastructure expansion.

The two leaders inspected electrification projects in Kamutu A, Kamutu B, and Kianamuri villages in Evurore Ward, where more than 150 households are set to be connected to electricity.

The inspection is part of a broader rural electrification programme that has already connected over 2,000 households to the national grid across Mbeere North, Runyenjes, Manyatta, and Mbeere South constituencies in the past six months.

Ruku reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, describing it as key to unlocking rural economic potential and improving livelihoods.

“Electricity is a key enabler of progress. It opens up our villages to trade, education, and innovation while reducing reliance on non-renewable energy,” said Ruku.

Njagagua urged residents to support government initiatives that promote growth and unity.

“When we support development, we support peace, opportunity, and prosperity for our people,” he added.
